Music is changing, here’s why…

As a musician, songwriter and co-founder of Gigable, I hear a lot of people saying there is “no good music these days.”

What really strikes me is that I think it’s the opposite!  There’s more great music being produced every day than any other time in history. It’s just that the traditional ways to discover pop music are broken – or perhaps obsolete.

My wife asked me the other day, “who’s the next Rolling Stones?”
Well, when Brit-Pop-Blues-Rock comes back for a solid 10-20 years, there will be another Rolling Stones.

The bands from the 60s and 70s that made it big are a household brand, just like Coke. Two generations of music fans were spoon-fed very few options – and it stuck with them.

There’s over 100 million songs that have been recorded. How will you pick the ones you listen to for the next 20-30 years?

“Somewhere” Lyrics

I’m drivin’ somewhere
And you’re cryin’ somewhere
And if time brings us together
We’ll make it through another day

Well it’s just a mad race
And there is no finish line
Yes, you’re in a mad race
And there is no medal in the first place

I’ll never want
To leave you all alone
I’ll be right next to you
Out there – somewhere

You might be, killing yourself
Trying to achieve a perfect day
Reaching for that oasis
Only to find a wicked mirage

I think the fences that we build
For our own security
Keep out the people who
Who we need the most

Introducing Gigable Music!

IMG_9184Friends, I’m very excited to announce that my company has launched a mobile app that will help you easily discover great songs and bands!

There’s more music being created now than any other time in history and who has the time to search through Spotify? The Gigable Music app will bring the cream of the crop to the surface. Pick a playlist, press play. If the song hits you, there’s a ticket button to go see the band live. The “local playlist” uses gps to determine where you are and automagically builds a playlist based on bands touring near you. Simple and potent. No fluff and no ads! It’s like radio 2.0.

The launch was set for July 1 and we hit the target! The app itself has been months in the making. The concept is something I’ve been experimenting with for years.

There’s several very cool shows we are producing this summer to introduce some of the music we are finding. You can see the schedule on Gigable.net (or in the app after 7/1!)

Anyone who loads the app gets $20 toward a concert, so give it a spin!

What is Spotify (et al.) good for?

Spotify is great for exposure to a worldwide audience. It’s not great as an income source or true fan building.

Release singles to the digital world, then drive new listeners back to a self-branded website to find out who they(fans) are.

May The Fourth Be With You

I woke up thinking about how all water in the ocean is being held down by gravity and how it’s a true miracle we just don’t go shooting off the planet into space.

Life is good.  I appreciate everything and everyone around me.  The more positive I become, the more positive situations occur. The more gratitude and generosity I show, the more goodness comes back to me.

We all know this to be true, but yet act selfishly way too often.

The human condition is quite ironic at times.

Behind the scenes: Gigable Showcase at Woodstock Opera House

We had an amazing night hosting our first show in the Americana series. All three bands knocked it out of the park and the crowd showed lots of love.

The production staff at Woodstock Opera House are top notch and we look forward to working with them on many more shows.

Here’s some behind the scenes footage of sound check and the view from backstage:

Artist of the week – Toad The Wet Sprocket

What’s in a band name?  According to Glen Phillips (lead singer) it was “a joke that went on too long” and they had to adopt the name by default. “Toad The Wet Sprocket” originated from a Monty Python skit and the guys thought it would be a hilarious temporary name until they came up with a real one. It is memorable and it stuck.

The song this week is called “California Wasted” and was released earlier this year on their latest album.
